You Wanna Talk About Relentless?

In April (2006) I come back from the Caribbean isle with the rough manuscript of my book finished, right?

The book is way too long, I know that.

So I need a fresh eye, an outside opinion.

Some perspective.

I got some perspective all right.

Here’s how it went, along with the perspective: I call a buddy who knows a lot of people and ask him if he knows a freelance editor. He gives me the name of a guy, an editor who is also a writer with several books in print.

I contact this other writer, this freelance editor, and cut a deal for a preliminary read of the manuscript, plus some notes, see if we can work together.

He wants $1,500, half up front.

I send him $750.

Two months later I haven’t heard from him.

He won’t respond to emails or calls.

My buddy who put me together with him makes some inquiries. This guy, this other writer, has done this sort of thing before. Takes the front money and then does nothing and refuses to respond to communications.

He just steals the money. (Now as I write four months later, still no notes, no money returned, no nothing.)

This other writer’s name is Arthur Yorinks.

But where’s the perspective? Here: Arthur Yorinks writes children’s books.

Right: Books that mold the minds of our children.

Relentless.

Since Arthur Yorinks’ books average almost 5 stars in their reader reviews, kids must like them. I wonder if Arthur’s world view creeps into his books, in subtext.

There are many reasons why the world is so fucked up, no? Some not so obvious.
